Heart Checkup

We all need a regular heart checkup.  When we go to a doctor for a checkup, they listen to our hearts to make sure that it sounds like it is beating correctly. If something does not sound right, more extensive tests may be ordered to see if all is well. Just as it is important to make sure that our physical hearts are working well, it is even MORE important to have a checkup on our spiritual hearts!

The Bible mentions the heart many times so we know that the condition of our hearts is something that is very important to the Lord.  Proverbs 3:5 says “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”  Proverbs 4:23 says:  “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”   In Psalm 51:10, David prayed “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” Psalm 26:2 says: “Test me, LORD, and try me, examine my heart and my mind.”   Matthew 5:8 says: “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” Psalm 19:14 says: “May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.”

So, how do we examine our spiritual hearts? One of my favorite verses about the heart is Hebrews 4:12.  It says: “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”  The Word of God will show us the condition of our spiritual hearts.  When we examine our hearts in the light of God’s Word, we can see what changes need to be made so that we can have a pure heart that is pleasing to the Lord.  Spending time with the Lord is also an essential part of a heat examination. The Holy Spirit can convict us of sin and show us where we need to repent and get our hearts right.

We need regular Heart Checkups!

God bless!
